Chalk Pastel or “soft pastels” is the first recommended tool for your artistic toolbox, especially for a newly budding artist! Although Chalk Pastel may look and feel like chalk, it does not actually contain chalk. It consists of a binder material to keep the powdery color together.

Chalk Pastel

Chalk Pastel is a good medium to start learning about color and will assist in learning the basics of shading and blending. You use your fingers primarily for blending and smudging the pastel, but how you hold the pastel can create different effects. For example, the large flat edge is good to fill and layer the pastel while the smaller edge at the end of the Pastel is good for hair or a furry look.

At Artfully Yours School of Fine Art, we encourage our students to learn each medium by illustrating a few different subject types (e.g. animals, landscape, still life, anime, people, etc.). A teacher at Artfully Yours will guide you in selecting different subjects based on your level of experience, interests, and age group.

By illustrating multiple subject types in each medium, you gain an understanding of what that medium can do for you, adding it to your artistic toolkit. Once you have sufficient experience with chalk pastel, your teacher will recommend you move on to the Charcoal.
